Catriona Matthew insisted that top Europe into a memorable Solheim Cup victory at Gleneagles rated higher in her career.
Team USA looked to retain the trophy however Bronte Law came from behind to beat Ally McDonald on the 17th
Pettersen defied the pressure to pinpoint the winning putt from six feet before announcing that could function as »closing chapter » in her professional career, and Matthew insisted she had any doubts which the Norwegian would justify her inclusion.
« I had faith in her all the time, » said Matthew, who stood by her claim before this week that a Solheim Cup win could be bigger than her major breakthrough at Royal Lytham 10 years back. « This is actually the very best for me without doubt. Together with the staff , nothing tops that to be fair.
« It’s unbelievable, there’s never been a better moment. It was going to come down to some putt there or here and for Suzann to receive it, that is phenomenal. It was a great second and a fantasy come true.
« All 12 of those playersthey all played their hearts out. We knew it was going to come down and for Suzann to hole it, although to be shut? It was a great team performance. They contributed a lot when it was not for many of us, and we never would have won it.
« I think this is one of the biggest women sporting events in the world. The Women’s World Cup is enormous, but this – like the Ryder Cup – has increased hugely over the previous 30 years as it started. It is such a spectacle of women’s golfclubs. And for it to come down to that last game, that putt, you simply can not get anything more exciting. »
Asked to describe her emotions since Pettersen was lining up her match-clinching birdie putt, Matthew added: »I can barely watch, actually. It is much worse watching. You are kind of at the moment and at the zone when you are playing, and you’ve got control.
« But if you’re watching, you just have to religion from the player that is out there, and they are all great players. And I’d confidence that they went to perform it. However, it comes down to that last putt?
« It’s only been a wonderful week. We’ve had good performances. We needed to get there although Everybody remembers the putt. So, well done everyone. »
Matthew also paid tribute to Pettersen later she announced her retirementadding: »Over the last 15 or 20 decades, Suzann has been among the trailblazers in European women’s golf. I believe we’ve played on seven, eight Solheim Cups . So, she’s simply been a portion of women’s golf and the Solheim Cup.
« It’s such a special moment for her. If it occurs to be her last moment in professional golf, well, may also go out in the top. »
