Catriona Matthew insisted that higher was rated by contributing Europe to some Solheim Cup victory at Gleneagles in her career than her Women’s British Open triumph.
Team USA appeared on course to keep the trophy at the late stages of Sunday’s singles, however Bronte Law came from behind to beat on Ally McDonald on the 17th
Pettersen defied the pressure to pinpoint the winning putt from six feet before announcing that could be the »closing chapter » in her professional career, and Matthew insisted she had any doubts that the Norwegian would justify her addition.
« I had faith in her all the time, » said Matthew, who stood with her claim earlier this week a Solheim Cup win would be larger than her main breakthrough in Royal Lytham 10 years ago. « This is actually the most appropriate for me without doubt. With the team around you, nothing tops that to become fair.
« It is unbelievable, there’s not been a better second. It was always likely to return to a putt here or there and for Suzann to receive it, that’s phenomenal. It was a moment and a dream come true.
« All 12 of these playersthey all played their hearts out. We knew that it was going to be shut, but to come down to that last putt and for Suzann to pit it? It was a fantastic team performance. They contributed a great deal when it was not for many people, and we never would have won it.
« I think this is one of the greatest women sporting events in the world. The Women’s World Cup is huge, but that – like the Ryder Cup – has grown hugely over the previous 30 years because it first started. It is such a spectacle of women’s golf. And for it to return to this last game, that last putt, you simply can not get anything more exciting »
Asked to describe her feelings since Pettersen was lining up her match-clinching birdie putt, Matthew added: »I really can hardly see, actually. It is much worse watching. You are sort of at the zone and in the present time when you’re playing, and you have got control.
« But if you are seeing, you merely have to faith in the participant that’s on the market, and they’re all excellent players. And I had confidence that they went to perform it. Nonetheless, it comes down to this putt?
« It’s just been a terrific week. We’ve had great performances. We needed to arrive although Everybody remembers the putt. Thus, well done everyone. »
Matthew also paid tribute to Pettersen once she announced her retirement, adding: »Over the past 15 or 20 decades, Suzann has been one of the trailblazers in Western women’s golfclubs. I think we have played on sevenSolheim Trainers together. So, she’s simply been a portion of the Solheim Cup and women’s golf.
« It is such a special time for her. If it occurs to be her final minute in golf, may too go out at the top. »
